Research areas

Three research areas

The research topics explored in Arai Laboratory are grouped into the following three areas:

  1. Acoustics
  2. Speech Communication (Science/Technology)
  3. Speech Communication (Interdisciplinary)

1. Acoustics

Our “Education in Acoustics” research project has received KAKENHI grants regularly since 2005. In addition, the “Study on Pitch Perception by Music Players” and “Pronunciations of German Songs” projects are ongoing.

2. Speech Communication (Science/Technology)

The following is a list of research topics on speech science and technology:

  • “Speech perception in noise/reverberation, intelligibility of speech, and speech signal processing (e.g., speech enhancement)”
  • “Speech-related welfare technology and supporting system for impaired people, acoustic analysis of speech and language disorders, and speech production and perception of hearing-impaired and elderly people”
  • “Development of speech-processing algorithm with real-time system and sound-related applications”

3. Speech Communication (Interdisciplinary)

The following is a list of research topics in interdisciplinary fields:

  • “Linguistic research of phonetics and phonology including acoustic phonetics and their applications (Applied Linguistics)”
  • “Speech science including speech production and articulatory phonetics, hearing science including speech perception and auditory phonetics, and cognitive science related to speech and sounds”
  • “Speaker characteristics of speech”
